Elation is an early advanced solo with a little drama and a Broadway musical feel, yet retaining elements of a contemporary Romantic style.
The story that it tells in my mind is an old fashioned kind of boy meets girl situation, maybe at a wedding reception or other family setting where a dance is taking place. The young man has his sites set on a particular girl who is beautiful in his eye but one he considers would never dream of accepting his invitation onto the dance floor. Still, with great apprehension, he considers the opportunity too sweet to pass by. In the first playing of page 1 he is slowly, nervously making his way across the room to where she stands watching the happy couples on the dance floor. He cautiously invites her to dance with him and she accepts. On the repeat of the first page they begin their dance, conservatively at first, still wondering if this is real and as they enjoy the music, the atmosphere and the sweeping joy of dancing together, they relax, break into smiles and fly around the room, elated at their new found friendship and natural gracefulness. The sense of joy and energy increases throughout the key changes and thickening texture of the music. They are elated!
